After acceptance, an article needs production, checks before publication, support for readers to find it, and care of its published record. The parts divide by these tasks. Submission and peer review belong to the work before acceptance; fabrication, fraud and the wider consequences of unreliable research belong to research and publication integrity.

- Proofs and post-publication care — checking proofs against the accepted manuscript, preventing errors at handoffs, coordinating release and publicity, responding to criticism, and retaining records
- Making a journal article findable — article and author identifiers, readers’ browsing habits, and text, figures, files and links that support discovery through search
- Corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern — choosing and writing a notice, initiating and investigating concerns, access to correction notices, and how retraction procedures work and fall short
